Practical Classics 1000 Mile Reliability Run 2018

You have seen this Westminster restoration in previous articles posted as we have worked on the restoration for Practical Classics. You may have even seen us working on it at the NEC Practical Classics Restoration Show where we working on it on the main stage where we took it from a shell and actually drove it off the stage at the end of the show. It has taken 2 years from then to raise awareness of the parts needed to complete the car restoration and we all would like to thank all parties who donated parts that allowed us to complete this amazing restoration. Now the car has completed the tour it will be auctioned at Anglia Car Auctions with all proceeds going to Lennox Children’s Hospice.

The final leg was to take the car on a 1000 mile tour around Britain, we set off from our premises on Tuesday 17th April to head down to Brooklands Motor Museum to start the tour on Wednesday 18th April.  The Tour schedule was:

 XK70 Jaguar Festival confirms more cars and personalities

 

  • Former Jaguar Chairman and Chief Stylist to be guests of honour
  • Le Mans XJ220C joins three Group C racers
  • More historic Jags to be driven at speed up the hill
  • TV presenter Edd China at event with ‘Ask Edd LIVE’
  • Progress made towards gathering a record-breaking 700 XK cars

 

The number of attractions confirmed for this summer’s XK70 Jaguar Festival at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb is growing fast. The family-friendly event in Worcestershire on 9-10 June will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the ground-breaking XK120 and all subsequent XK cars and engines, and in the last month more well-known Jaguar personalities and cars have committed to taking part.

Two guests of honour newly confirmed for the Festival are Sir John Egan, the chairman of Jaguar from 1980 to 1990 who saved the company from bankruptcy, and Keith Helfet, the former Chief Stylist at Jaguar who designed the XJ220 supercar, the XK180 concept car which commemorated the XK’s 50th anniversary, and the 1990s F-type concept. Another well-known personality at the Festival will be Edd China, former presenter of Discovery Channel’s hit TV programme ‘Wheeler Dealers’, filming and taking questions in a session of ‘Ask Edd LIVE’.

Cars newly confirmed for the two-day event include the TWR XJ220C driven by David Coulthard, David Brabham and John Nielsen at Le Mans in 1993; XJR-5 road and race cars built by TWR, with XJR race cars to be driven at speed up the Shelsley Walsh course by Goodwood Hillclimb winner Justin Law;  the JD Classics collection of historic XKs, some to be driven up the hill by Chris Ward; the full range of Special Edition Eagle E-types; and Eagle’s historic collection of a dozen important E-types.

Other cars previously confirmed for the Festival include three of Jaguar’s legendary Group C racing cars, including the 1987 World Sportscar Championship-winning XJR-8; XK120s, 140s, and 150s; and a whole raft of XK-engined cars including C-types, D-types, E-types, and XJ6s. Cars are being brought to the Festival by owners who live in the UK, mainland Europe, Scandinavia, and the USA. The event’s organisers, the XK Club, are aiming to set a world record by gathering 700 classic XKs in the same place at the same time.

Other notable personalities attending the XK70 Jaguar Festival include Norman Dewis OBE, Jaguar Cars’ former chief test and development driver, who set a new speed record for production cars in 1953 by driving an XK120 at 172.412 mph; former amateur racing driver Peter Sargent and, from Finland, mechanical engineer Dr. Samir Klat, who between them developed and modified the famous low-drag Lightweight  E-type, 49 FXN together with the late-Peter Lumsden; Peter Sutcliffe who raced a D-type and Lightweight E, and drove GTOs and GT40s at Le Mans, and Richard Attwood, who raced for several British teams in Formula One before winning Le Mans in a Porsche 917 in 1970.

The Festival promises a packed programme of entertainment for all the family, with a competitive hillclimb on Saturday and high-speed demonstration runs up the hill on Sunday; a vintage fairground; a shopping village; live music; and a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight fly-past – all in the beautiful hillside setting of the world’s oldest surviving motorsport venue.

International Jaguar XK Club

Founded 20 years ago by Philip and Julie Porter, the Club has members in more than 50 countries. Porter, who has owned four XKs since 1973, has written 30 motoring books, including a number on Jaguars. Murray Walker calls him ‘Mr. Jaguar’.

Shelsley Walsh

Located in Worcestershire, Shelsley Walsh is the oldest motorsport venue in the world still in use. Set in beautiful countryside, yet not far from the M5 motorway and easily accessible, it is the ideal setting for XK70.

Jaguar XK 120 Project

We picked this project up following the Jaguar XK Coastal Tour of Britain for prostate cancer that we supported as mobile mechanic for half of the tour. The American owner did not think he would finish the tour until we got our hands on the car sorting out his gearbox and running issues. Not only did he finish the tour but he really enjoyed the drive once his car was working properly. At the end of the tour he approached us to see if we would undertake the rest of the work that the vehicle required, we were only to happy to help.

The car needed a full engine and gearbox rebuild plus quite a bit of bodywork to address the corrosion beneath the headlight pods. We also repaired the woodwork and aluminium in the base of one door. Following the fabrication work to make good the bodywork we lead loaded, prepped and painted the body to show standards.

We have been plowing through the work and now the car is ready to go back to its owner in Washington DC in the USA. Before it goes back over the pond though we will be appearing with the car and owner at the XK70 Jaguar Festival at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb in Worcestershire on 9th and 10th June 2018.

Daimler Consort full bodywork restoration

This Daimler was originally brought to ourselves for bodywork restoration work to be undertaken as the customer has been undertaking the mechanical restoration work themselves and to say it has been a challenge would be an understatement.

However having said that we love a challenge and so we have painstakingly dismantled, repaired and rebuilt this beautiful classic Daimler. This not only included metal fabrication work needed to re-create areas of body panels but also extensive wood work on the frame and chassis. We then lead loaded, prepped and painted the vehicle to show standards and we are now in the process of rebuilding the car, installing the interior, roof lining, windows, dashboard, trim and new wiring loom.

Classic Bristol Air Con Project

This Bristol has been with us before for a complete body restoration back in 2014-15 which is detailed in our older posts.

This time she came in to be fitted with modern air conditioning to make the comfortable cruising even more comfortable should we ever get a summer again. We would like to thank Pat at Fenair who fitted the unit after we had custom fabricated the brackets on site.

The customer was ‘chilled’ with his latest addition.

Aston Martin DB6

This beautiful Aston Martin DB6 has been in to us many times for mechanical maintenance and general upkeep repair works to keep it in exceptional running order and condition.

This time we repaired one of the electric windows and gave her a tune up to ensure she was running absolutely smooth and true.

Lotus Elan 150-5 2+2

This vehicle was initially brought to our new premises to have a new dashboard and wiring loom installed but following the client recognising the quality of our workmanship he requested that we see the project through to completion.

Now as we as installing the wiring loom and dashboard we have also done the following:

  • Installed the seats
  • Installed the trim
  • Completed the mechanical work
  • re-sprayed the roof to make the car 2-tone
  • rebuilt the car to finish
